That’s Great Backyard Bird Count, by the way.

Today, my mom and I did a little walking around Moab (we walked a little over 3 miles, actually) and counted birds for the Backyard Bird Count.  It was nice to get outside (it was in the 60s today), and fun to do something with my mom.  Here’s the only good photo of the day – a cute Black-Capped Chickadee.

Afterward, we went to Moab Diner for lunch.  Yum!  Our count list is below.

30 House Sparrows

25 American Crows

12 Common Ravens

6 Dark-Eyed Juncos

4 Eurasian Collared-Doves

4 Black-Capped Chickadees

4 White-Crowned Sparrows

3 House Finches

3 Lesser Goldfinches

2 American Goldfinches

2 Northern Flickers

1 Black-Billed Magpie

1 Cooper’s Hawk

Yesterday, I went for my first bike ride OFF road in a long, long time.  It was a beautiful day (up to 71°F), and the ride was short, easy, and fun.  It was the North 40 trail just north of Moab.  Rich went with me, and was VERY patient with me.  I need that right now…I also feel like I need training wheels, and maybe a LOT more riding.

I am definitely interested in getting out and riding more this year.  I may need to be riding by myself for a while first, though, because I am not the mountain biking giant I once was.  I need to get back to some better level of fitness.

My plants are still a little on the winter-sleepy side, but they are starting to wake up.  Some of the outdoor cacti are perking up, and I have one indoor cactus blooming.

  • How nice to get out. I miss walking but with over 2 feet of snow on the ground and mounds so high you can’t see around corners it just isn’t feasible. Soon though, they say, your air will be here and after the floods we will be able to get out. Boy I sound drab but actually I’m not as I am getting all sorts of things done in the house.

  • Glad to see the birds are returning to Moab, it’s already short and sandal-wearing weather in St. George even at night so I have also been seeing more birdies. 🙂 And the flowers on that cactus are pretty! Miss you guys and look forward to seeing you again in a few weeks!

  • Lorraine – Sorry about the snow! It’s not supposed to be winter anymore, is it?!

  • Chris – I’m glad the weather is finally getting nice, too! We miss you, too.

  • It was a pleasure to walk with you and chat, as always. I can’t say anything about your biking adventure because, when I got home after our birding expedition, I had to take a short nap. Lunch was delicious. Thank you.

  • Looks beautiful right now, the last picture I saw you guys were covered in snow.

  • Mom – I’ll have to admit that I took a LONG nap afterward…not from the walk, though, but because I got up earlier than usual. 🙂

  • Charles – It’s been gorgeous for the last two weeks. I’m so glad that winter is thinking about being over!

  • You take really good bird pictures. I can’t even walk in my back yard because the snow is so high. This week the temperature is going to be above freezing, so I hope a lot of snow will melt.

  • Aunt Marcy – WOW! I can’t believe how much snow the northeast got! It’s been glorious here, in the mid 60s almost every day (except today, of course).
