A Few Soup Reviews

Campbell’s is now making soup that comes in bags, and calling them ‘Go Soups’.  It’s a strange concept.  I’ve read other ‘blogs and reviews online about these new soups, and they’ve largely been referred to as ‘Hipster Soups’, which makes me giggle a little.  However, the ridiculous pictures of surprised or vacuous-looking teens on the bags prove that that is the exact image they were hoping for.

So far, I’ve tried Coconut Curry with Chicken and Shiitake Mushrooms, Roasted Red Pepper and Smoked Gouda, Golden Lentil with Madras Curry, and Spicy Chorizo and Pulled Chicken with Black Beans.

* * * * *  The Roasted Red Pepper soup was excellent.  I loved it, and will most definitely buy it again.  It had good flavor and wasn’t overly creamy.  Here it is, in its bag.  I ate it too quickly to take any photos of the soup itself.  This one gets 5 stars.  If you just cover the overly-surprised woman who is shouting the name of the soup at you with your hand, you can appreciate the soup more.  I promise.

* * * *  Coconut Curry with Chicken and Shiitake Mushrooms also gets my approval.  I suspect that I could make better Coconut Curry soup at home, but as I have never tried it, I can’t say for sure.  I CAN say, however, that this one is good, and it had chunks of actual vegetables included, though I didn’t really detect much chicken, OR many shiitakes.  It was good, and I’d be willing to buy it again.  I’d also be willing to look for a recipe for soup like this to make myself.  I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

* *  Golden Lentil with Madras Curry.  Well, no.  I make spectacular Curried Lentil soup at home (*yes, I’m patting myself on the back right now*), and this was NOT up to par.  I am still giving it 2 out of 5 stars because it wasn’t terrible.  Just wasn’t very good.

* *  Spicy Chorizo and Pulled Chicken with Black Beans – Meh.  I was disappointed in this one.  I like everything in it.  However, there was some flavor that Campbell’s added that makes it not all that great.  Maybe it’s just because it comes in a bag.  Who knows?

Has anyone else tried these?

  • I’ve tried the red pepper, and it was fantastic. Very convenient for a take and go lunch too. Thanks for the reviews!!

  • Barb – You’re certainly welcome…Cactus Kate – bringing you news you can USE since 2008. Heh heh.

  • That is a strange concept. I wonder if there’s some sort of travel-related thing associated with it but probably not since cans are also good for travel.

  • Coconut curry with chicken and shiitake sounds really good. I’ll certainly try it, mostly because of your recommendation. I agree that the roasted red pepper and Gouda is terrific! Thanks for being the Guinea Pig.

  • Ha ha ha, Chris – That’s the first thing I thought, too…travel-related. Easy to take. Those bags squish a little flatter than cans.

  • Sonja (AKA ‘mom’) – You’re welcome. Any time. I enjoy being the guinea pig. Sometimes you happen upon something really delicious or useful that way!

  • Those pictures may be too weird for me to be able to buy the soup. But I would love your curried lentil soup recipe if it can be made vegetarian style I am a lentil soup fan – I have a simple red lentil soup recipe that I am planning to make this week.

  • Annecy concurs with a resounding “No” on the pictures.

  • Even though the Tasty Bite stuff isn’t soup, it is really delicious too! It’s mostly Indian food and I am using it as a primary source of sustenance these days. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think. Just put it over steamed rice (you can even buy the Tasty Bite rice if you’re too lazy or too time-limited to make it yourself).

  • Catherine & Annecy – Check your e-mail! 🙂

  • Jen – I’ve never seen ‘Tasty Bite’ anything! I’ll look for it next time I go to the market!

  • I have not even seen these soups, maybe because I haven’t looked for them. This is the first I’ve heard about them. Perhaps I’ll buy one for emergencies.

  • Aunt Marcy – They would be great emergency food! I really do recommend the Red Pepper one.
